Smithsonian-affiliated finance museum plans to open in Boston's Seaport

The Museum of American Finance, the nation’s only independent museum dedicated to finance and financial history, plans to open a new permanent location in Boston next summer, marking a new era for the institution after years without a physical home.

The museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, announced an agreement on a 10-year lease for exhibit space on Commonwealth Pier, a mixed-use waterfront development in the Seaport District. It is expected to open on July 1, 2026.

This will be the museum’s first permanent headquarters since 2018, when flooding forced it to vacate its longtime home at 48 Wall St. in New York City. Although the facility sustained damage, the museum’s renowned collection, including historic documents, rare financial artifacts, and memorabilia, remained unharmed.
