Arthur Cashin, Jr. was a highly regarded market pundit, trusted advisor and dedicated member of his community. In his over 60 years in the industry, Art had a monumental impact on financial advisors, clients, his fellow employees, and—as a market spokesperson on CNBC—the investing public at large.
Starting at PaineWebber in 1980, Art most recently served as the Director of Floor Operations for UBS Financial Services Inc. at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). During his tenure, he welcomed and hosted thousands of financial advisors and clients on the floor of the NYSE and was instrumental in helping recruit hundreds of advisors.
In addition to his role at UBS, he was well-known for his daily newsletter, Cashin’s Comments, which was around for over 25 years and was read by more than 100,000 people daily. He was also regularly featured on CNBC’s “Art Cashin on the Markets,” which aired several times per week. Through these outlets, Art became a household name for investors across the country, who benefitted from his savvy insight on the markets, good humor and wit.
Art started on Wall Street as an assistant clerk at Thomson & McKinnon in 1959. After five years on the trading floor, he was made partner at P.R. Herzig & Co. and became a member of the NYSE. He was one of the youngest traders to have a seat on the Exchange. Art then joined PaineWebber as an institutional floor broker and managed its floor operations. Throughout his career at the NYSE, he served as governor, member of the Market Performance Committee and virtually every committee at the Exchange. He was a member of Mensa, The Bond Club of New York and The Knights of Malta, and he chaired the NYSE Fallen Heroes Fund.
